About Us

We are Renae and Tiarna, founders of Niella Cattery. We are a close knit family that has chosen to breed kittens because of our deep love and attachments to the animal throughout our lives. There are other members of our family behind the scenes who also enjoy helping in maintaining our cattery and hobby.

We’ve came to love the British Shorthair breed not only for their beautiful appearance but also for their wonderful personalities. Additionally, we appreciate the longhair trait within the breed, which is why we decided to include both the shorthair and longhair varieties in our cattery. This sets us apart from other catteries in Perth.

Our Story

We had the most wonderful pet cat which we got from a backyard breeder. At the time we didn’t realise that this particular breeder was acting illegally. Unfortunately he was diagnosed with HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) at the age of two. Our vet told us that because it was developed at such a young age, it was most likely inherited. Later we found out that we weren’t the only ones who experienced this from that breeder.

At one of his frequent vet visits after his diagnosis we were told the most reassuring thing that we ever could’ve heard at the time which was that he was a very happy cat. We were also told some heart breaking news that because of his enlarged heart he probably only had six months to live. Amazingly though, he lived for a further two years from that prediction. It is our firm belief that it was because of how happy and loved he was that kept him going for so long. When he passed away we were absolutely heartbroken and devastated, which still affects us to this day. He remains still loved in our memories and hearts.

Because of that painful experience we wanted to breed cats for the joy of others with happy and healthy cats that they can love and cherish all their life. Due to what we went through we have made health the top priority of our breeding program because we understand just how shattering it is to lose such a precious family member.
